Signs of Times

Debris_by_ani_r “We have taller buildings, but shorter tempers, wide highways but narrow viewpoints. We spend more but have less. We buy more, but enjoy it less. We have bigger houses & smaller families, more conveniences but less time. We have degrees, but less common sense; more knowledge, but less judgments; more experts, but more problems; more medicine, but less wellness.

“We spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast get too angry too quickly, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too seldom, & watch TV too much, love too seldom & lie too often.

“We have multiplied our possession, but reduced our values. We’ve learned how to make a living, but not life; we’ve added years to life, not life to years.

“We’ve been all the way to the moon & back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor. We’ve conquered outer space, but not inner space. We’ve done larger things, but not better things. We’re cleaning up the air, but polluting the spirit. We’ve split the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less.

“We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait. We have more income, but less ethics; more leisure & less fun; more kinds of food, but less nutrition; more acquaintances, but fewer minds; more effort but less success.

“We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but have less communication. We’ve become long on quantity, but short on quality.

“These are the times of fast foods & slow digestion; tall men & short character; steep profits & shallow relationships. These are the times of world peace, but also of domestic violence. It is a time when there is much in the show window, & nothing in the stockroom.

“These are the days 2 incomes, but more divorce; of fancier houses, but broken homes. These are the days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway self-respect, one-night-stands, & pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill.”

*I got this thought provoking piece from one volume of Health & Home. It is from an anonymous writer. The first time I read this it moved me and stirred my being because they are in fact true and happening nowadays. Some may say it’s a bit pessimistic in manner but it makes us want to think about our lifestyle. It makes us realize there’s something wrong and change is necessary. These are the signs of times, a time to change ourselves for the better. Don’t you think?
